Sunday, September 26—Mountain Dulcimer
Music by Guest Artist Bill Collins Green Hill will welcome performer and teacher Bill Collins. He will play the selections on the mountain dulcimer including:
“Lovely Love,” music by Eunice Wyeth, lyrics by Eunice Bathrick. Wyeth and her family were part of the Shaker community in Harvard, MA. Wyeth and her husband Joseph were converted to Shaker beliefs by the founder of the Shaker movement, Mother Ann Lee (1736-84). After moving away from Harvard, Wyeth returned for the last years of her life. It is thought that this hymn expresses her joy at being reunited with the community. Bathrick was Wyeth’s niece.
“Simple
Gifts,” by Joseph Brackett, ca. 1848. Perhaps the best-known of all Shaker hymns. Its
origin is unclear, but it is thought have been written by Brackett (1979-1882), an elder in the Shaker community of
Alfred, ME. American composer Aaron Copland (1900-1990) popularized the song by using it as a theme for his 1944
ballet Appalachian Spring. It is also the tune used by English poet and musician Sydney Carter (1915-2004)
for his 1963 song “Lord of the Dance.” “Standard-Bearers
(Lion-Hearted, Brave and True),” from the 1908 Canterbury Hymnal. Eleven hymnals were published
between 1842 and 1908 by the Shaker community of Canterbury, NH. Collins, of Wilmington, DE, offers private lessons,
conducts workshops, and performs at dulcimer festivals in the northeast. He has also produced three books of arrangements
for mountain dulcimer—The Best in the Bag, Carolan’s Dulcimer, and Come Life, Shaker Life.
